The 2024 Stellar Gospel Music Awards was filmed over the weekend on Saturday, July 20 at Las Vegas’ Orleans Arena.
Hosted by Loni Love and Rickey Smiley, the “greatest night in gospel” featured performances from Tamela Mann, Kierra Sheard, Israel Houghton, Koryn Hawthorne, Karen Clark Sheard, Ricky Dillard, Chandler Moore, Mali Music, Tasha Page-Lockhart, Anthony Brown and group therAPy, Da’ T.R.U.T.H, Kelontae Gavin, Lisa Knowles-Smith, Melvin Crispell III, and more.
“I am very honored to be co-hosting the Stellar Awards this year. It will be a fun and blessed good time!” said co-host Loni Love ahead of the lavish affair.
This year’s honorees included Kim Burrell, who received the Aretha Franklin Icon Award, and Tye Tribbett, who was awarded with the James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award. Of his multiple wins—including Album, Song, and Artist of the Year—Tribbett shared on Instagram, “LORD I just wanna thank You for being SO GOOD to me. Maaaaan I’m still putting my words together! I’m so grateful to God for such a night […] Look what the Lord has done!”
During her acceptance speech, Burrell issued an apology to the LGBTQ+ community. “Let’s give them a great, big round of applause. We want them to prosper and to sincerely know that we must all do the work to embrace all of God’s people and show forth his love to everyone. Amen,” she expressed. “I hope this award and this moment can be the beginning of a bridge building and listening to each other as we follow peace with all men and develop the character of God that requires seeing God.”
As footage of the speech leaked online, fans weren’t thrilled about her sentiments. One tweeted, “Kim Burrell could’ve kept that ‘apology.’ That is not what allyship looks like even as a person, much less a Christian. Don’t be faking the funk for a community you have never supported. They deserve so much better than that.” Another described it as Burrell entering “comical villain territory” and felt the apology wasn’t sincere.
