JD Vance joked that incarcerated Diddy is a “great Christian theologian” while promoting his new faith book “Communion.”

JD Vance cracked a joke about Sean “Diddy” Combs being a “great Christian theologian” while promoting his new memoir at the Nixon Presidential Library on June 25, 2026.

Vance was discussing his book “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,” which chronicles his conversion to Catholicism and spiritual journey.

One chapter, titled “More Money, More Problems,” takes its name from the classic 1997 track by Combs and The Notorious B.I.G.

During his talk, Vance explained the concept behind the chapter title and couldn’t resist the opportunity for some dark humor.

“Well, again I’m a millennial and so I believe that’s the wisdom of the great Christian theologian uh P. Diddy. Who as we found out in the last couple years is very much not a Christian or a theologian,” Vance said, drawing laughs from the audience.

The joke landed because of Combs’ July 2025 conviction on federal charges that resulted in a four-year prison sentence, with a projected release date in 2028.

His legal troubles stand in stark contrast to the aspirational messaging of the “More Money, More Problems” song, which explored the paradox that wealth doesn’t solve life’s deeper issues.

Vance wasn’t naive about the potential backlash. He immediately acknowledged the risk.

“I’m going to get in trouble for all kinds of things. That’ll be one of them. That will be in an attack ad at some point in the future,” he said with a knowing smile.

Vance’s book explores how material success and spiritual fulfillment don’t always align, a theme that resonates with the original song’s message, even if the Diddy reference doesn’t.
